A fim de comemorar o Dia Mundial do Livro a 23 de Abril, a Biblioteca Pública de Macau sob a égide do Instituto Cultural, a Direcção dos Serviços de Educação e Juventude, a Biblioteca da Universidade de Macau e a Associação de Bibliotecários e Gestores de Informação de Macau, organizaram uma série de actividades. A Semana da Biblioteca de Macau 2017 será dedicada ao tema “A Leitura Une as Pessoas”, destinadas a promover a cultura da leitura na cidade.
A leitura parte de uma inclinação pessoal, constituindo um processo de auto-aprendizagem que nos permite aproximar-nos dos nossos favoritos através da aquisição de conhecimentos. A leitura constrói o nosso caminho para o mundo através de uma ponte à base de livros. A leitura reúne pessoas com ideias e interesses semelhantes, inspirando a sua demanda por um ponto de convergência espiritual. A leitura propicia ainda horas de prazer em família, unindo imperceptivelmente corações em momentos breves mas intensos. A leitura abre as portas ao conhecimento, permitindo uma melhor compreensão dos costumes e das paisagens de diferentes regiões do mundo e ligando as pessoas umas às outras, ao conhecimento e ao mundo.

A well-designed school library plan has a positive effect on enhancing students’ academic achievements. However, most principals, teachers and parents do not have a clear understanding of the potential benefits of school library projects and enquiry-based learning. Hong Kong authors and university lecturers Poon Kam Ying and Poon Ming Chu will share with lovers and teachers of children’s literature their experience of participating in Chinese picture book forums, as well as activities of and exchanges related to the Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award. Amid the recent booming development of Chinese picture books, the Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award has contributed significantly in terms of nurturing and encouraging the creation and publication of picture books in Chinese. By starting the lecture from how to read and appreciate the award-winning picture books such as About Where Does Rice Come from, Where Is the Hero and Grandma Lin’s Peach Tree, the Poon sisters will give the participants a deeper understanding on the characteristics of Chinese picture books and enlighten them about the appreciation thereof, along with their guide to the application of and creating tips for such books. |

Jointly organised by the Macao Public Library of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, the University of Macau Library and the Macao Library and Information Management Association, the “2018 Macao Library Week” was inaugurated on Saturday, 21 April, at 10:30am, at the Old Court Building. A number of activities, including a charity sale of archived periodicals, book exchange, Bookcrossing, thematic talks, exhibitions, reading accessories workshops and reading game booths, among others, are also held at the same venue during the promotional days of the “Macao Library Week” on 21 and 22 April, while a charity sale of archived periodicals and Bookcrossing will also be held at the Taipa Library and the Centre of Permanent Education of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, open to the general public.
The opening ceremony was officiated by the Acting President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Leong Wai Man; the Head of the Department of Education of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Kong Ngai; the Head of the Department of Public Library Management of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Tang Mei Lin; the Head of the Division of Continuing Education of the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, Wong Chi Iong; the Librarian of the University of Macau Library, Wu Jianzhong; and the Director of the Macao Library and Information Management Association, Wong Kwok Keung.
This year’s “Macao Library Week” is themed “Reading Brings People Together”, aiming to reduce the distance between people, knowledge and the world through reading, thus promoting a reading culture in Macao. The organisers will offer a variety of reading promotion activities in different locations during April and May. In addition to a number of family activities, two thematic talks “Taste Nature”, conducted by Macao environmental educator and activist, Joe Chan, will be held on Saturday, 21 April, at Sir Robert Ho Tung Library, embarking a physical and spiritual journey around books, nature and food with the participants, in order to get to know different perspectives of Macao’s natural environment, exploring the coexistence between man and nature together. In turn, in the lecture “The Literature Landscape of Macao”, to be held on Saturday, 12 May, Macao writer Eric Chau will share his personal experience in reading and writing, introduce different strategies and directions for Macao-related writing and representative works by local authors, and probe into alternative publishing possibilities other than the traditional method based on an observant analysis of the current development of Macao’s literary industry.
In April and May, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau will organise various family reading activities such as “Parent-Child Nature Picture Book Workshops” and a series of other activities including reading sessions, storytelling and workshops. In addition, between April and July, the Youth Centre of Bairro do Hipódromo will exchange its book collection with the Centre of Experimentation for the Youth, the Youth Activities Centre of the “Exterior Port”, the Youth Activities Centre of Areia Preta, the Centre of Educational Activities of Taipa and the Lakeside Multi-Purpose Activity Centre, respectively. In addition to a number of exhibitions and promotional activities, the University of Macau Library will also host several thematic talks such as “Public Libraries @ Smart City”, “Guest Lecture @ UM Library” , “Library Director’s Governance Philosophy”, among others.
Furthermore, the Macao Library and Information Management Association will organise “The Best German Book Design” Exhibition during the “Macao Library Week” and “The 8th Macao Library Volunteers and Work-Study Students Quiz Competition” on 28 April, aiming to enrich the participants the knowledge of the library through the quiz competition, thematic talks such as “Conversations with Leading Academic and Research Library Directors: International Perspectives on Library Management”, “2018 Reading Forum (I) – Professional Lecture on Library Management for Reading Promoters” and “2018 Reading Forum (II) – Lecture on the Power of Picture Books – Appreciation and Application of Books Winning the Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award”.

“Macao Library Week” Reading brings people together
In order to mark the “World Book Day” celebrated on 23 April, the Cultural Affairs Bureau Public Library, the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau, the Library of the University of Macao and the Macao Library and Information Management Association co-organize the “2018 Macao Library Week”, which is held in April and May and is themed “Reading Brings People Together”, allowing the public to open the doors to knowledge, understand emotions and reduce the distance between people, knowledge and the world through reading,.
This year, the Macao Library Week co-organizing entities offer all kinds of activities starting in April, namely thematic lectures and family programmes held by the Public Library. In the lecture “Taste Nature”, Joe Chan, a Macao environmental educator and activist, through the five senses and through reading, will embark on a physical and spiritual journey around books, nature and food with the participants, in order to get to know different perspectives of Macao’s natural environment, exploring the coexistence between man and nature together. In turn, in the lecture “The Literature Landscape of Macao”, Macao writer Eric Chau will share works by Macao authors, the pleasures of reading and the meaning of writing and, thereby, present the characteristics and current status of literature in Macao and probe into the relationship between the city and the development of literature.
Family activities include the “Library Orienteering for the Family—Detective Scavenger Hunt”, which requires grown-ups and kids to play the role of detectives and take on a series of challenges and difficulties in order to help grandpa find his grandchildren’s lost books. The “Series of Reading Workshops for Parents and Children” includes “The Music Playground”, “Move Your Body” and “Fun Facts about Classic Toys”, which, through musical instruments, body rhythm and the sharing of old toys, respectively, stimulate children’s interest and diversified growth, further encouraging them to read and thereby open the doors to knowledge. Workshops and family activities will be conducted in Cantonese, without simultaneous translation.
In addition, the organizing entities will hold two promotional days for the “2018 Macao Library Week” on 21 and 22 April (Saturday and Sunday), at the Old Court Building, as well as an opening ceremony on its first day. Activities during the promotional days include a back periodicals charity sale, a book exchange and bookcrossing, among others, as well as other parallel activities to be held at the Old Court Building, namely workshops, thematic lectures and reading games. All members of the public are invited to participate.

Book collection for the “Book Exchange” activity starts on 1 March
As part of the “2018 Macao Library Week”, the Macao Public Library of the Cultural Affairs Bureau will launch the “Book Exchange” activity from Thursday, 1 March, in order to promote reading habits as well as to encourage residents who love reading to make friends through books and share their resources. The book collection period will last from 1 March to 8 April.
Any residents interested in participating in the “Book Exchange” activity can bring their book collection to the Bureau’s libraries and receive the “Stamped Scorecard”. During the activity’s promotional period on 21 and 22 April, residents can exchange books of equivalent value to the value accrued on their scorecard at the Old Court Building located in Av. da Praia Grande. Book collection locations include: the Macao Central Library, Sir Robert Ho Tung Library, the Patane Library, the Ilha Verde Library, the Mong Há Library, the Library in Ho Yin Garden, the Wong Ieng Kuan Library in Areia Preta Urban Park, the S. Lourenço Library, the Taipa Library and the Coloane Library. The method for book collection is as follows: the staff will categorise the books according to their original price and count the books individually. The scoring method is one point for every MOP10 but the score for books worth less than MOP10 will be rounded off; for each point the scorecard will be stamped once. The maximum score for each book or set is 100 points, and the books without price indication will be valued at MOP10. Textbooks, exercise books, magazines, indecent publications, books related to religion, comics, IT books published over one year ago, travel books published before 2016, audio-visual materials, promotional materials, pirated books and periodicals (in violation of copyright laws), damaged and soiled books, incomplete collections and books with inside pages inscribed cannot be exchanged. Only individuals can participate in this activity.
